Defending a World Heritage Ecosystem — Protect Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru is a globally significant ecosystem and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, supporting extraordinary biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services for both wildlife and surrounding communities.
Today, Lake Nakuru faces serious threats from:
- Untreated and partially treated sewage discharge
- Industrial and urban pollution
- Unsustainable and poorly regulated development
Legal Protection Through the Courts
Baboon Project Kenya has taken decisive legal action to defend these fragile ecosystems and has successfully secured Interim Orders from the High Court of Kenya — Environment and Land Division — to protect them.
The key cases include:
1. Pollution of Lake Nakuru
Baboon Project Kenya v. County Government of Nakuru
-ELC Petition No. E004 of 2024
(Seeking to stop the discharge of untreated and partially treated sewage into Lake Nakuru.)
2. Degradation of Menengai Forest and Crater
Baboon Project Kenya v. Geothermal Development Company (GDC)
- ELC Petition No. 003 of 2025
(Seeking to halt environmentally harmful activities contributing to degradation of the Menengai ecosystem.)
These court orders represent an important step in securing legal protection for Lake Nakuru and Menengai and ensuring that development complies with environmental law.
