Baboon Project Kenya is a conservation initiative based in Nakuru, Kenya, dedicated to enhancing wildlife protection, restoring natural habitats and ecosystems, and addressing human-wildlife conflicts in the communities surrounding Lake Nakuru National Park.
Our overarching goal is to enhance wildlife conservation, minimize human-wildlife conflicts, and restore natural ecosystems while promoting sustainable, nature-based solutions and ecosystem services.
In partnership with local authorities, including Kenya Wildlife Services( KWS)and the Wildlife Research Institute (WRTI), we actively involve community members and international volunteers in our conservation activities.
Recently, we have launched various environmental conservation efforts aimed at alleviating the effects of recurring droughts that have adversely impacted wildlife. Our initiatives include drilling boreholes and installing eco-friendly solar-powered water pumps to benefit both wildlife and park rangers. Additionally, we have implemented rainwater collection troughs to support wildlife during dry periods and organized regular clean-up activities within the park. We also focus on the removal and elimination of invasive plant species at Lake Nakuru National Park that threaten herbivore forage and engage local communities in park clean-up exercises.
We are also prominent champions of wildlife and environmental justice, employing legal strategies to protect our natural resources from pollution. Recently, we filed a legal petition and received a ruling from the High Court of Kenya - Environment and Land Division, which has put a stop to the county government's ongoing pollution of Lake Nakuru caused by the discharge of raw untreated sewage.
Furthermore, we are committed to fostering the next generation of conservationists through wildlife clubs established in 50 local schools. In collaboration with NCBA Bank Group, we initiated the Green Schools Project, which has successfully led to the planting of over 10,000 seedlings in primary schools across Nakuru County.
Our international volunteer program encompasses wildlife conservation, reforestation, and community education initiatives. This program presents a remarkable opportunity for individuals aged 16 and older who are enthusiastic about wildlife and nature conservation. It is particularly suited for students on a gap year, those pursuing internships, and anyone looking for a purposeful holiday that contributes positively to the rich wildlife and local communities of Africa and Kenya.
